Excessive Sweating in the underarms and hands, treated with Botulinum Toxin

Some people always keep a sweater on hand to cover the stains, or dry their palm before shaking hands. If this happens to you, know that it is a common reason for consultation, in both men and women, and it has a name: hyperhidrosis. Dr. Thuel evaluates it discreetly and, if appropriate, applies botulinum toxin to the skin to reduce sweating. So you can shake hands, hug or get dressed without worrying about it.

Medical consultation · US$100, VAT included. This amount is applied in full toward your treatment or procedure if you formalize it with your payment on the same day or within the following seven calendar days. It can be the full payment or a first payment of more than US$100.

Dr. Thuel personally sees every consultation, so her appointment availability is limited. We suggest booking in advance.

The essentials before you decide

What Excessive Sweating treatment involves, step by step

General information so you arrive at your consultation with a clear idea. In your case it may vary; Dr. Thuel will confirm it during the consultation.

It may be right for you if…

  • You choose your clothes so sweat stains will not show.
  • You dry your hand before shaking hands or signing a document.
  • You always carry a sweater or a spare shirt, just in case.
  • You have already tried antiperspirants and want a medical option.
What it is
Small injections of botulinum toxin into the skin of the area that sweats. It temporarily reduces the activity of the sweat glands.
How it is done
The area is marked and several superficial injections are applied with a very fine needle, spread out in a grid.
Advantages
Non-surgical. It takes little time and you return to your routine the same day.
Who performs it
Dr. Irene Thuel, in the clinic's office.
Anesthesia and discomfort
For the underarms, anesthetic cream or none at all. For the hands, which are more sensitive, cold or local anesthesia may be used. The injections are brief pricks with a very fine needle; most people tolerate them well.
Duration
Usually between 20 and 40 minutes, depending on the areas.
Sessions
One application per area. It is repeated when the sweating returns, usually between 3 and 10 months later.
Recovery and care
You return to your activities the same day. Avoid intense exercise and strong heat, such as a sauna, for 24 hours. Do not massage the area that day.
When it shows
It usually starts to show between 2 and 10 days later, and reaches its peak at around 2 weeks.
How long the result lasts
In the underarms and hands it usually lasts between 3 and 10 months; it varies from person to person.
Who should not have it
It is not applied during pregnancy, with some neuromuscular diseases or if there is an infection in the area. If you are breastfeeding, let the doctor know. The doctor reviews this at the consultation.
Follow-up visits
Usually a follow-up visit at around 2 weeks. After that, when the sweating starts to return.

Before treatment, and other options

If you sweat all over your body, first we need to find the cause

The toxin works in specific areas, such as the underarms and hands. If you sweat all over your body, if the sweating started suddenly or comes with other symptoms, your doctor should first check whether there is another cause. And if you would also like to care for another area, these options may help:

Frequently Asked Questions

What people who sweat too much ask

Will it hurt?

It is a little uncomfortable because of the injections, although the needle is very fine. Small bruises sometimes appear.

Is it the same Botulinum Toxin used on the face?

Yes, it is the same substance. What changes is where it is applied (the skin of the area that sweats) and the goal.

What is the investment for sweating treatment?

It depends on the area and the dose. We give you the price at the consultation, before anything is applied.

The consultation costs US$100, VAT included. If you decide to have a medical treatment or procedure, that amount is applied in full toward your treatment or procedure when you formalize it with your payment on the same day as the consultation or within the following seven calendar days. It can be the full payment or a first payment of more than US$100.

If I stop sweating in one area, will I sweat more in another?

The treatment acts only where it is applied. If you notice changes in other areas, tell the doctor at your follow-up visit and she will evaluate them.

What if the sweating started suddenly?

Then it is best to check with your doctor first, especially if you sweat all over your body or have other symptoms. Sometimes sweating is a sign of something else that needs to be looked into.
