Biostimulators: caring for firmness with your own collagen

Sometimes your skin looks more tired than you feel: thinner, duller, less firm than before. This is not something solved by filling, but by caring for the skin from within. Biostimulators encourage your skin to produce its own collagen, the protein that keeps it firm, and the change comes gradually. Dr. Thuel chooses the substance based on your skin and accompanies you session by session, so your skin can look the way you feel.

The essentials before you decide

What treatment with Biostimulators is like, step by step

General information so you arrive at your consultation with a clear idea. In your case it may vary; Dr. Thuel will confirm it during the consultation.

It may be right for you if…

  • You touch the skin on your face and it feels thinner or less firm than before.
  • Your skin looks dull, even though you take care of it and rest.
  • You want a gradual change that others notice without knowing why.
  • You prefer to care for your skin calmly, rather than look for a filler.
What it is
Injectable substances that encourage your skin to produce its own collagen. They don't fill like a gel: the change is gradual.
How it is done
They are injected with a needle or cannula into the area being treated. With some substances, massage at home is recommended.
Advantages
No operating room or incisions; you return to your routine the same day. The change is gradual and looks natural, because it comes from your own collagen.
Who performs it
Dr. Irene Thuel, in the clinic's office.
Anesthesia and discomfort
Numbing cream or none; many of these products are prepared with local anesthetic. You will feel needle pricks and some pressure; most people describe it as tolerable discomfort.
Duration
Generally between 30 and 45 minutes per session.
Sessions
Generally 1 to 3 sessions, one every 4 to 6 weeks, depending on the substance and your skin.
Recovery and care
You return to your activities the same day. Avoid intense exercise for 24 hours and direct sun for a few days. If we recommend massage, it is usually a few minutes, several times a day, during the first week.
When it shows
It usually starts to show 4 to 8 weeks later, and keeps improving for about 3 months.
How long the result lasts
It varies by substance: generally 12 to 18 months, and with some up to about 2 years. A maintenance session is usually planned.
Who should not have it
They are not applied during pregnancy or breastfeeding, with an infection in the area, with active autoimmune diseases or with a tendency toward thick scars (keloids). The doctor reviews this at the consultation.
Follow-up visits
Between sessions, and about 3 months after the last one, to see how your skin responded.

Firmness, rather than volume

When biostimulators make sense

They work on skin firmness and quality. Filling is not their main purpose. And if what you are looking for is something else, we will tell you at the consultation.

  • Thinner, dull skin or early laxity: this is where biostimulators usually make sense.
  • Targeted volume in the lips, cheekbones or chin: that is addressed with Hyaluronic Acid.
  • Lines that appear with facial expressions: this is where Botulinum Toxin helps.
  • Significant laxity: it is worth talking about a facelift.

Six options, different uses

Six options to stimulate the skin, and what each one is for

Poly-L-lactic acid

Firmness and support over larger areas, progressively.

Calcium hydroxylapatite

Collagen and support for the jawline, neck or chest.

Polycaprolactone

Collagen to improve skin firmness and quality.

Injectable hydration

Elasticity and glow, working from within the skin.

Polynucleotides

They aim to improve the skin in delicate areas, such as under-eye circles.

Plasma and exosomes

They complement microneedling or laser; the evidence on them is still limited.

A treatment done in sessions

How a biostimulator plan is put together

  1. Reading your skin

The doctor looks at and feels your skin: how thick it is, how much it has loosened, what the texture is like.

  2. Session plan

She chooses a substance, or a combination, and explains how many sessions she expects for your case.

  3. Application and massage

With a needle or cannula. In some cases, we will recommend massage at home.

  4. Follow-up visits

Between sessions, we check how your skin is responding. If needed, the plan changes.

Patience and care

What can happen with biostimulators, and how it is prevented

What to expect

  • The change becomes noticeable over time, as your skin responds.
  • At first there may be some swelling, which then goes down.
  • The number of sessions and how long results last depend on the medical evaluation.

Discomfort and risks

  • Swelling, redness or tenderness, and temporary bruising.
  • Possible nodules, small lumps under the skin; technique and the recommended massage help prevent them.
  • Uncommon: infection or a reaction to the substance.
  • As a precaution, they are not applied during pregnancy, breastfeeding or over an active infection.

Is this treatment right for you? During the consultation, Dr. Thuel reviews your case and tells you frankly whether it suits you and what it involves. The consultation costs US$100, VAT included, which is applied in full toward your treatment or medical procedure if you confirm it with your payment the same day or within the following seven calendar days. This can be the full payment or a first payment of more than US$100.

Frequently Asked Questions

What we are asked most about biostimulators

Will my face look filled?

That is not their purpose. Unlike hyaluronic acid, what they do is stimulate your own collagen, and that happens gradually.

When will I notice the change?

Gradually, as your skin produces collagen. It generally starts to show 4 to 8 weeks later and keeps improving for about 3 months. Each person responds at their own pace; that is why we schedule follow-up visits.

Can lumps form?

It is possible, especially with some substances. That is why careful technique and the massage or care instructions we give you matter.

What is the investment?

It depends on the substance and the number of sessions. At the consultation we give you the price of the complete plan, so you know from the start how much you will invest.

The consultation costs US$100, VAT included. If you decide to have a medical treatment or procedure, that amount is applied in full toward your treatment or procedure when you formalize it with your payment on the same day as the consultation or within the following seven calendar days. It can be the full payment or a first payment of more than US$100.

Skin that reflects how you feel

The consultation is the first step. Dr. Thuel takes a close look at the quality of your skin and tells you what is advisable, in what order, what she does not recommend and the investment for each stage. If your case allows, it can be done the same day; this is optional.
