The essentials before you decide
What Breast Reduction involves, step by step
General information so you arrive at your consultation with a clear idea. It may vary in your case; Dr. Thuel and Dr. Poveda will confirm it at your consultation.
It may be right for you if…
- At the end of the day, your back, neck or shoulders feel strained by the weight of your breasts.
- You take off your bra and see strap marks on your shoulders.
- You have irritation or a rash under the breast that keeps coming back.
- You avoid exercising or have a hard time finding clothes that fit.
- You want to move more freely, without carrying that weight.
- What it is
- Surgery that removes breast tissue, fat and skin to make the breast smaller and lighter, and lifts the areola.
- How it is done
- Incisions are made around the areola, downward and, sometimes, in the breast crease. The excess is removed, the breast is reshaped and closed with stitches.
- Advantages
- Besides reducing size, it lifts the areola and improves shape in the same surgery. Many patients notice relief from the discomfort caused by the weight.
- Who performs it
- Dr. Irene Thuel and Dr. Juan Ramón Poveda Xatruch, plastic surgeon, working as a team in the operating room.
- Anesthesia and discomfort
- It is usually performed under general anesthesia. The physicians will tell you which type applies in your case. The first few days bring pain, swelling and tenderness, which are usually managed with pain relievers.
- Duration
- Generally between 2 and 5 hours, depending on breast size and technique.
- Hospital stay
- It is an outpatient procedure: you go home the same day, after a few hours of observation and with a companion. If drains are placed, they are usually removed within a few days.
- Recovery and care
- A surgical or wire-free support bra is worn day and night, usually for 4 to 6 weeks. You usually return to the office in 1 to 3 weeks and to intense exercise after 4 to 6. Sleep on your back and avoid lifting heavy objects during the first few weeks.
- When it shows
- The change in size is visible from the start. Swelling takes a few months to go down, and the scars mature over 1 to 2 years.
- How long the result lasts
- It is generally long-lasting. Even so, weight changes, pregnancies and age can modify size and shape again.
- Who should not have it
- It is not recommended if you smoke or have conditions such as diabetes or heart disease without medical management. If you plan to have children or lose a lot of weight, it is sometimes best to wait. Both physicians review this during the consultation.
- Follow-up visits
- In general, during the first week, at one month, and between 3 and 6 months. Both physicians adjust the dates according to how you are healing.

Before removing volume
Back pain has several causes
That's why it's reviewed first. If you like your size and what bothers you is that your breasts have dropped, a lift may suit you better. And if now isn't a good time for surgery, Dr. Thuel and Dr. Poveda will tell you.
Consultation
We ask where it hurts, since when, and what you have tried. This helps rule out that the pain comes from somewhere else.
Team consultation
Dr. Thuel and Dr. Poveda examine you together. They talk with you about the size you'd like and the scars that would remain. And about the risks, too.
Tests and surgery
Your health is checked before surgery. Dr. Thuel and Dr. Poveda operate as a team, with the anesthesia and technique they both determine for your case.
Follow-up visits
After surgery, the team checks how the incisions are healing and how you feel with your new size.
Scars and breastfeeding
What a Breast Reduction involves
There will be a scar on the breast, sensation may change and breastfeeding may be affected. It's best to know this from the first appointment.
What to expect
- Pain and swelling at first. Bruising or tender areas may appear.
- Besides reducing, it lifts the areola and improves shape.
- Over time, the shape settles and the scars mature.
- Weight, pregnancies and the years can change the breasts again.
Discomfort and risks
- Bleeding, infection, scarring, asymmetries or anesthesia complications.
- Visible scars on the breast, depending on the technique and your skin.
- Changes in sensation or healing problems.
- It may affect the ability to breastfeed.
