You look at yourself in profile and feel your buttocks are not in balance with the rest of your figure. This Buttock Augmentation uses fat from your own body, without implants, taken from areas such as the waist or flanks. It carries serious, though uncommon, risks, which is why we discuss them from the very first appointment. Dr. Thuel and Dr. Juan Ramón Poveda, Physician and Surgeon, Specialist in Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery, listen to you and accompany you together. They aim for a harmonious figure that feels like your own.

The essentials before you decide
How Buttock Augmentation with your own fat works, step by step
General information so you arrive at your consultation with a clear idea. It may vary in your case; Dr. Thuel and Dr. Poveda will confirm it at your consultation.
It may be right for you if…
- You try on a pair of pants and feel your buttocks lack volume for your figure.
- Over the years or after losing weight, you notice your buttocks have lost volume.
- You have fat in your abdomen, waist or back that you would like to put to use.
- You prefer to use your own fat rather than an implant.
- What it is
- Surgery that takes fat from another area of your body by liposuction and places it in the buttocks to add volume and shape.
- How it is done
- First, fat is removed from areas such as the abdomen, waist or back. It is processed and injected in small amounts; plastic surgery societies recommend placing it only under the skin, without entering the muscle.
- Advantages
- It uses your own fat, without implants, while also reducing fat in other areas. The incisions are only a few millimeters long.
- Who performs it
- Dr. Irene Thuel and Dr. Juan Ramón Poveda Xatruch, plastic surgeon, working as a team in the operating room.
- Anesthesia and discomfort
- It is usually performed under general anesthesia or sedation. The physicians will tell you which applies in your case. There is pain and swelling both in the buttocks and in the liposuction areas; it is usually managed with pain relievers.
- Duration
- Usually 2 to 4 hours, depending on the areas the fat is taken from.
- Hospital stay
- It is an outpatient procedure: you go home the same day, after a few hours of observation and with a companion.
- Recovery and care
- For at least 2 weeks, do not sit or sleep on your back; after that, sit with a cushion under your thighs until about 8 weeks. Wear a compression garment for 6 to 8 weeks; return to office work at around 2 weeks, sitting on a cushion, and to exercise at around 8. Walk from the first day and, if the physicians recommend it, have drainage massages.
- When it shows
- Volume is visible from the start, but it decreases as the swelling goes down and the body absorbs part of the fat. The result is best seen between 3 and 6 months and is fully defined at around one year.
- How long the result lasts
- On average, 60 to 80% of the transferred fat is retained; in your case it may be less. The fat that remains usually lasts for years, and gaining or losing weight also changes the volume.
- Who should not have it
- It is not recommended if you have little fat available in other areas, if you smoke, during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or with heart disease, clotting disorders or diabetes that is not under medical management. Both physicians review this at your consultation.
- Follow-up visits
- In general, during the first week, at one month, and between 3 and 6 months. Both physicians adjust the dates according to how you are healing.
