The essentials before you decide
What Breast Augmentation involves, step by step
General information so you arrive at your consultation with a clear idea. It may vary in your case; Dr. Thuel and Dr. Poveda will confirm it at your consultation.
It may be right for you if…
- You look in the mirror and feel your bust is out of proportion with your figure.
- After pregnancy, breastfeeding or weight changes, you notice your breasts have lost volume.
- You notice one breast is different from the other and you hide it with your clothes.
- You want to choose a neckline or a swimsuit without thinking twice.
- You want a natural-looking bust, in harmony with your body.
- What it is
- Surgery that places an implant behind the breast gland or the chest muscle to add volume and shape.
- How it is done
- A small incision is made, usually in the fold under the breast, around the areola or in the armpit. The implant is placed through it and the incision is closed with stitches.
- Advantages
- It provides a greater and more predictable increase in volume than other options, such as your own fat. The scar is usually small and sits in a fold or at the edge of the areola.
- Who performs it
- Dr. Irene Thuel and Dr. Juan Ramón Poveda Xatruch, plastic surgeon, working as a team in the operating room.
- Anesthesia and discomfort
- It is usually performed under general anesthesia; in some cases, under local anesthesia with sedation. The physicians tell you which applies in your case. During the first days there is pain and pressure in the chest; it is usually managed with pain relievers and eases over the first weeks.
- Duration
- Usually between 45 minutes and 2 hours in the operating room.
- Hospital stay
- It is an outpatient procedure: you go home the same day, after a few hours of observation and with a companion. If drains are placed, they are usually removed within a few days.
- Recovery and care
- A compression or sports bra is worn, usually for 4 to 6 weeks, and it is best to sleep on your back. You can usually return to the office in 1 to 2 weeks and to intense exercise in 4 to 6. In the meantime, avoid lifting heavy objects and do not smoke, because it affects healing.
- When it shows
- The change in volume is visible from the start. The swelling goes down and the implant settles over about 3 to 6 months.
- How long the result lasts
- Implants are not for life: many last between 10 and 20 years, and it is expected that at some point they will need to be replaced or removed. Age, weight and pregnancies also change the bust.
- Who should not have it
- It is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, with an active infection, with untreated breast cancer or with medical conditions that are not under medical management. Smoking increases the risks. Both physicians review this during the consultation.
- Follow-up visits
- Usually in the first week, at one month and between 3 and 6 months; then once a year. With silicone implants, periodic breast imaging studies are recommended.
Why implants are considered
When your bust is out of proportion with your figure
Volume
When you feel your bust is out of proportion with your body.
Lost volume
After pregnancy, breastfeeding or weight changes.
Symmetry
Balancing size differences between the two breasts. A slight asymmetry may remain.
Before talking about sizes
In some cases, a different surgery is a better fit
If your breasts have dropped, what you are looking for may be a lift, with or without an implant. And if now is not a good time because of your health or your plans, Dr. Thuel and Dr. Poveda will tell you so, plainly.
- Size in proportion: it is decided with you, based on your measurements, your skin and your tissue, not on a catalog size.
- Implant shape and placement: both physicians explain the options that apply to your body.
- Your plans: if you plan to have children or breastfeed, tell us from the start, because it changes the conversation.

Consultation and evaluation
Dr. Thuel and Dr. Poveda examine you together, from the front and in profile, and ask what you would like to change. If surgery makes sense, they decide with you the implant size and where it will be placed.
Health review
Before surgery, your tests and medical history are reviewed. The anesthesia and technique are decided by both physicians.
Surgery and follow-up visits
Dr. Thuel and Dr. Poveda are together in the operating room. You go home with your instructions, and both of them see you at the follow-up visits to check how you are healing.
Implants, no fine print
What we will not promise you
Every surgery leaves a scar and carries risks. It is better that you know this from the start.
What to expect
- At first there is swelling and pain, and bruising or tender areas may appear.
- The shape settles over time; that is why follow-up visits matter.
- Implants do not last forever. It is expected that at some point another surgery will be needed.
- If you have a mammogram, always tell them you have implants.
Discomfort and risks
- Bleeding, infection, scarring, asymmetries or anesthesia complications.
- Capsular contracture: the tissue the body forms around the implant hardens and sometimes requires another surgery.
- Changes in sensation, implant rupture or implant displacement.
- Uncommon: a type of lymphoma (a cancer of the immune system) associated with implants, and general symptoms that are still being studied.
The team is responsible for the diagnosis, the technique and the follow-up visits. Your part is to tell us everything about your health (medications, previous surgeries) and to take care of yourself at home.

Frequently Asked Questions
Frequently asked questions about Breast Augmentation
Will I end up looking exaggerated?
That is exactly what we take care to avoid. Both physicians decide the size with you, based on your measurements and how much skin and tissue you have, so that it stays in proportion with your body.
Am I a candidate?
Usually a healthy adult woman with a stable weight and realistic expectations. If you are planning pregnancies or breastfeeding, tell Dr. Thuel and Dr. Poveda: whether you can breastfeed with implants depends on each case.
Do implants last a lifetime?
They are not considered lifelong. They require follow-up visits, and it is expected that at some point another surgery will be needed to revise or replace them. When that happens depends on each patient.
Who performs my surgery?
You are cared for by a team: Dr. Irene Thuel and Dr. Juan Ramón Poveda Xatruch, MED5800. Both are present at the consultation, in the planning, in the operating room and at every follow-up visit, and Dr. Poveda performs the surgery together with her.
What is the investment?
It depends on what your case requires. After the consultation, we give you the complete quote, with no obligation to have surgery.

When can I return to my routine?
Usually, you return to office work in 1 to 2 weeks and to intense exercise in 4 to 6 weeks. During the first 2 weeks, it is best to avoid exertion and lifting heavy objects. Your case may vary; Dr. Thuel and Dr. Poveda adjust your instructions at each follow-up visit.
