Botulinum Toxin: relaxing expression, without freezing it
Some days the mirror shows you a serious or tired face that does not reflect how you feel. Often it is not your skin: it is your expressions, which over the years leave their mark on the forehead, between the brows and at the crow's feet. Botulinum toxin temporarily relaxes the muscle that forms those lines. Before applying anything, Dr. Thuel watches how your face moves, to soften what bothers you while you stay you: with your smile, your gaze and your way of expressing yourself.

The essentials before you decide
What Botulinum Toxin treatment is like, step by step
General information so you arrive at your consultation with a clear idea. In your case it may vary; Dr. Thuel will confirm it during the consultation.
It may be right for you if…
- You look in the mirror and notice lines on your forehead or between your brows that were not there before.
- People ask if something is wrong, when you actually feel great.
- You want to look more rested without anyone noticing you had something done.
- You clench your jaw and feel those muscles are tense or prominent.
- What it is
- A purified protein that, in very small doses, temporarily relaxes the muscle that forms the line. It does not fill or tighten the skin.
- How it is done
- With micro-injections using a very fine needle, at the points the doctor marks after watching your face in motion. It is done in the doctor's office.
- Advantages
- No operating room or incisions; you return to your routine the same day. The effect is temporary, so it can be adjusted or not repeated.
- Who performs it
- Dr. Irene Thuel, in the clinic's office.
- Anesthesia and discomfort
- It is generally not needed. You feel brief pricks from a very fine needle; most people describe it as tolerable discomfort.
- Duration
- The treatment usually takes 10 to 20 minutes. If it is done on the same day as the consultation, the appointment is somewhat longer.
- Sessions
- Generally, a single treatment. If needed, it is adjusted at the follow-up visit.
- Recovery and care
- You return to your activities the same day. You are usually advised not to rub the area for 24 hours, not to lie down for about 4 hours and to avoid intense exercise that day.
- When it shows
- The effect usually begins to show 2 to 7 days later and peaks at around 2 weeks.
- How long the result lasts
- Generally, 3 to 4 months, sometimes a bit longer; it varies by area and by person. At least 3 months usually pass between one treatment and the next.
- Who should not have it
- It is not administered during pregnancy or breastfeeding, with an infection in the area or with certain neuromuscular diseases, such as myasthenia gravis. The doctor reviews this at your consultation.
- Follow-up visits
- It is usually done about 2 weeks later, once the effect is complete, to adjust if needed.
What it is for and what it is not for
Toxin relaxes expression. It does not fill.
If what concerns you is something else, the doctor will tell you before applying anything. These are the cases most often confused:
- Lines that appear when you make facial expressions on the forehead, between the brows or at the crow's feet: this is where toxin is usually the right option.
- Lost volume in the cheeks, under-eye hollows or lips: this is treated with Hyaluronic Acid.
- Skin that has lost firmness: biostimulators or skin tightening can help here.
- Excess eyelid skin: this cannot be resolved with injections; it is worth discussing a blepharoplasty.
Areas where toxin is applied
What toxin can soften
Forehead, between the brows and crow's feet
Lines that give you a worried or tired look.
A more open look
A slight lift of the tail of the brow.
Jaw clenching
It aims to relax the masseters, the muscles that clench the jaw, and to slim the jawline when they are very prominent.
Smile and lips
Gums that show a lot when smiling, downturned mouth corners and upper lip.
Neck and chin
Neck bands and a dimpled-looking chin.
More radiant skin
Microdoses that aim to improve pores and radiance.
“A motionless forehead does not look rested: the treatment shows. That is why I prefer to go little by little and adjust at the follow-up visit.”
Four moments of the appointment
What the treatment is like with Dr. Thuel

She asks you to frown, smile and raise your eyebrows, to see which muscle forms each line.

Application
These are micro-injections with a very fine needle. It is done right there, in the doctor's office.
Follow-up visit
The doctor checks how your face responded and adjusts if needed. That is why she starts with conservative doses: adding is easier than taking away.
To choose wisely
Before putting yourself in someone's hands, ask three things
- Is the injector a physician registered with the Colegio de Médicos? At Clínica Thuel, it is administered by Dr. Irene Thuel, MED10355.
- Do they examine your face in motion before deciding on the dose? That is how lines are softened without freezing your expression.
- Are you offered a follow-up visit? Fine-tuning is part of the treatment, and it should be presented that way from the start.

Frequently Asked Questions

That is exactly what the doctor is careful about. She leaves untouched the muscles that give you expression, and if more is needed, she adds it at the follow-up visit rather than applying too much on the first day.
Will it hurt?

What if I am not happy with the result?
The effect is temporary and there is always a follow-up visit. At that visit, the doctor goes over with you what you liked and what you did not, and adjusts if needed.
If I stop getting it later, will I look worse than before?
No. When the effect wears off, the muscle moves again as it did before the treatment.
